Bagan Pagodas

The shrines & temples are unique sacred architecture.

Built over more than thousand years and destroyed frequently by earthquakes and flooding during monsoon. During the whole cycle of monument building once there were a maximum of roughly 4000 of them, more is not possible simply by calculating the available space which is not infinite.

Actually also that given amount is quite a lot and as indicated before they building and renovation cycles are continuous as usual in Burmese Days.

Most of pagodas are made from bricks because they were widely available during the period. Decoration for inside often was mural wall-painting and sculpturing plus
bas-reliefs similar to Angkor Wat > in Cambodia. As a matter of fact many Khmer shrines have similar architecture to Bagan and also are made from bricks such as the buildings at Phnom Chisor > and elsewhere.
