In Rakhine State are plenty of pagodas and temples.
Not as many as at Bagan but very impressive, the architecture and style is mostly different to other Myanmar Buddhist monuments. Here the material used to build them are natural rocks where elsewhere bricks are used, not much changed since Burmese Days.
In Rakhine State, the former Arakan powerful kingdoms were created until around the 17. Century. Some kings employed samurai mercenaries from Japan others paid Portuguese adventurers.
Today Bangladesh is quite near to the north but Bangladeshi are a real problem now (2013) since they bring a Muslim Tsunami into peaceful Buddhist > countryside. The capital is Sittwe about 5 hours downstream at the Gulf of Bengal >, in about 1990 there were roughly 20% Muslim in the city, now (2013) they are appr. 60%, all illegal immigrants from across the border, some call themselves "Rohingya", they all came in from the north.
Bangladesh is an extremely rotten country which only does one thing, they produce myriads of kids every day. Causing extreme problems in Myanmar and also beyond their northern border in India.
